Kristin, a graduate student in the Master’s of Education program at Loyola University in Chicago, recently decided to take the plunge and chop off her long, wavy, red tresses. With the Chicago summer and a vacation to Mexico coming up, she was debating a new look, but, like anyone gearing up for a major change, she was a little nervous. When she realized that her hair was long enough to donate to Locks of Love, her decision was made. As a future teacher, and all around great girl, Kristin lives by the credo, “Hey, it’s for the kids!” So, she took a deep breath, said goodbye to her nearly waist-length locks, and let Sarah give her a chic new look.
Locks of Love is a non-profit organization that provides hairpieces to financially disadvantaged children suffering from long-term medical hair loss from any diagnosis. To donate, the hair must be at least 10 inches and secured in a braid or in a ponytail. Luckily, Kristin had hair to spare, as she was able to donate 12 inches of her lovely, red hair, with enough left over for a Reese Witherspoon – inspired shoulder length look. Sarah secured her hair in a low ponytail, and then made one continuous cut through her thick hair, which she joked that it, “felt like she was sawing at it forever.” Once the ponytail was snipped, it was placed into a plastic bag for transport over to Locks of Love so that the hair can be manufactured into a hairpiece for a child. After the big cut, Sarah gave Kristin a chic shoulder length style. With the weight taken off her hair, Kristin looked stunning! The hairstyle, perfect for Kristin’s favorite summer activities like going for a run or hitting the beach, frames her face and is a great fit for her petite frame. Kristin loves her new look, saying that it will be “easy to style, yet still ponytail-able” and the kids from Locks of Love are sure to benefit from her lovely donated hair. After all, what better reason for a new style than supporting a terrific cause?
