LOCKS OF LOVE

Kristin, a graduate student in the Master’s of Education program at Loyola University in Chicago, recently decided to take the plunge and chop off her long, wavy, red tresses. With the Chicago summer and a vacation to Mexico coming up, she was debating a new look, but, like anyone gearing up for a major change, she was a little nervous. When she realized that her hair was long enough to donate to Locks of Love, her decision was made. As a future teacher, and all around great girl, Kristin lives by the credo, “Hey, it’s for the kids!” So, she took a deep breath, said goodbye to her nearly waist-length locks, and let Sarah give her a chic new look.

Locks of Love is a non-profit organization that provides hairpieces to financially disadvantaged children suffering from long-term medical hair loss from any diagnosis.  To donate, the hair must be at least 10 inches and secured in a braid or in a ponytail. Luckily, Kristin had hair to spare, as she was able to donate 12 inches of her lovely, red hair, with enough left over for a Reese Witherspoon – inspired shoulder length look. Sarah secured her hair in a low ponytail, and then made one continuous cut through her thick hair, which she joked that it, “felt like she was sawing at it forever.”  Once the ponytail was snipped, it was placed into a plastic bag for transport over to Locks of Love so that the hair can be manufactured into a hairpiece for a child. After the big cut, Sarah gave Kristin a chic shoulder length style. With the weight taken off her hair, Kristin looked stunning! The hairstyle, perfect for Kristin’s favorite summer activities like going for a run or hitting the beach, frames her face and is a great fit for her petite frame. Kristin loves her new look, saying that it will be “easy to style, yet still ponytail-able” and the kids from Locks of Love are sure to benefit from her lovely donated hair. After all, what better reason for a new style than supporting a terrific cause?

KERATIN TREATMENT

Colleen Kennedy, YSL Communications Coordinator and a previous girl of the month (check out her beauty tips here!), has a schedule teeming with glamourous, exciting events. With life at such a fun, active pace, Kennedy can barely find the time to grab a coffee, let alone carve out an entire hour to straighten her unruly curls. So, she decided to give herself a break, and went to see our dear friend and ultra-talented stylist, Mike Viggue, at  the Sally Hershberger Downtown Salon in NYC, for the  Keratin Complex Smoothing Therapy.

Colleen let us tag along, and Viggue, the consummate professional, walked us through the process. We checked in with Colleen a week later and she couldn’t stop raving about how easy it was to style, and how much healthier her hair feels! She looks absolutely gorgeous and said her morning beauty routine has been cut in half, which any girl on the go can appreciate! Check out this slideshow to see how Viggue tamed Colleen’s wild tresses!

The Keratin Complex Smoothing Therapy, unlike other straightening treatments such as the Brazilian, does not use formaldehyde, and is a “smoothing” rather than “straightening” procedure.  The process infuses natural keratin deep into the hair’s cuticle, and is safe even for color-treated and chemically processed hair. It eliminates frizz and adds shine and conditioning to the hair.

One of the problems with other straightening treatments is the sacrifice of volume. After all, what good is straight hair if it is limp and pasted to your head? Kennedy, prior to undergoing the treatment, expressed those same concerns to Viggue, who assured her that he would maintain her wonderful volume. And he kept his word, as seen in her after shot! Viggue said that with the Keratin treatment, he is able to adjust the amount of volume for the final look, whereas with Japanese straightening the volume is always decreased.  The Keratin treatment takes 2-3 hours, lasts between 3-5 months and the costs varies, depending on your hair type.

Mike Viggue, a Washington native, was previously voted  the Best Stylist for a Blowout in New York City in Lucky magazine. Viggue trained with hairstyling legends Vivienne MacKinder and Orlando Pita before settling in Manhattan at the Sally Hershberger Downtown New York Salon.

With a down-to-earth, friendly personality, Viggue is approachable and really listens to his clients. He explained everything to Colleen and customized the treatment to guarantee her happiness. His attention to detail, and talent are evident!

MEN’S GROOMING

Men’s grooming is subtle and detailed, yet extremely important.  As a celebrity stylist, I work with numerous male actors, from Jake Gyllenhaal to Josh Duhamel to Benicio Del Toro. I have been getting many requests to feature men’s styling and give tips on grooming here on sarahpotempa.com.  For my first men’s makeover, we are cutting and styling Jade Wiederholt, an entertainment consultant in New York City (and great friend of mine!) He is always jetting from one fun event to the next and constantly re-inventing his style.  Check out this summer makeover, including tips on beard trimming, neckline length, and styling tools in the slideshow below!

Jade came to New York after serving in the Peace Corps in Honduras where he educated local teachers and youth on HIV/AIDS and worked to improve community health standards. Despite the lack of electricity in his village, Jade, as a music aficionado, still managed to find a way to remain involved in the music biz….by hitchhiking to a neighboring village with “luz” to broadcast a radio show, called “La Hora de La Musica con Mango Jade”.

While at NYU, Jade interned at Columbia Records, The Latin Grammys and MTV. Since graduation, he has worked in the music industry at record labels, and artist management with artists from Boys Like Girls to Cyndi Lauper to Beyonce. In his industry, Jade has the opportunity to express himself through his personal style, and he truly embraces the chance. Since meeting at NYU, he and I have tried all sorts of new, creative styles on his hair as seen in the images below.
