Whether in a Bob Dylan song, a classic Monet or in the amazingly decadent chocolate chip cheesecake we indulged in last night (see, it’s still on our minds….and on our waistlines) there are instances that transcend time and pull us out of that boring linear idea of time. Such is the case with a certain type of beauty. We’ve all been there, or will be someday. Leafing through a stack of old photographs when there it is, front and center, that side ponytail at the Prom or that unfortunate bang-perm. Immortalized for all time. But, there, alongside the seemingly endless shots of the months growing out that awkward haircut, is another kind of picture. One where the beauty is effortless, timeless, eternal. Ok, maybe this isn’t a photo from the dreaded high school years. But, I have boxes of photographs of my grandma and her girlfriends where they just exude timeless beauty. Perhaps it is because I love her, or because I adore the structured hairstyles of the time, but when I see those pictures, of the women, so young, carefree and effortlessly stylish, I feel that their beauty transcends any trend or passing fad.
When I ran across this editorial, entitled “Morning Beauty” I had the same sense of transcendence. Sasha Pivovarova, as styled by Franck Benhamou and photographed by Camilla Akrans, looks hauntingly beautiful. With her lush red locks and striking blue eyes, she seems to stare right through the camera. Akrans gives the shoot an ethereal quality by infusing the photos with such deep, vibrant tones and an almost smoky feel. Although published in the September 2007 Numero’, the photographs have lost any of their power. In fact, the passage of time only reinforces my belief in the timeless quality of beauty.
